Varen

The commune of Varen, nestling in the Aveyron gorges between Quercy and Rouergue, is located in the extreme south-east of the Tarn-et-Garonne department. It comprises 6 villages or hamlets: Arnac, Lexos, St Grégoire, St Martial, St Vincent and Varen.

It has a rich built heritage. In Varen, an ancient fortified village dating back to the 9th century, you will find the listed 11th-century church of St Pierre de Varen, a masterpiece of Romanesque art, a 15th-century castle (also listed), the former residence of the Seigneur Doyen, and remains of fortifications. In Lexos, the majestic railway station, once so popular, was built on the model of the Gare d'Austerlitz (Paris)...
St Vincent has a church whose choir is covered in restored 17th century paintings, as well as the Château de Belpech, now a private residence...
In Arnac, the picturesque 12th-century church of St Martin with its 2 bell towers, the small church of St Grégoire with its tapestry-covered ceilings...

The 3 km-long stretch of water on the Aveyron river is a popular spot for canoeing, fishing and walking. There are also a number of footpaths for exploring the different landscapes that make up this vast commune.

Finally, the local schools, 17 associations and shops in Varen and Lexos make this a lively community where life is good. The presence of the Aveyron makes it a very popular place to visit ...
