The commune of Varen, nestling in the Aveyron gorges between Quercy and Rouergue, is located in the extreme south-east of the Tarn-et-Garonne department. It comprises 6 villages or hamlets: Arnac, Lexos, St Grégoire, St Martial, St Vincent and Varen.

It has a rich built heritage. In Varen, an ancient fortified village dating back to the 9th century, you will find the listed 11th-century church of St Pierre de Varen, a masterpiece of Romanesque art, a 15th-century castle (also listed), the former residence of the Seigneur Doyen, and remains of fortifications.
